Five Tips for Safely Putting a Fire Pit on a Wood Deck

A fire pit is most enjoyable when it is placed where you will use it most, which for many homes would be on the deck. Fortunately, you can enjoy a fire pit on your deck if you follow these tips.

Choose a Gas Fire Pit

You should never use a wood burning fire pit on a deck, regardless of the decking material. These fire pits get too hot and can lead to combustion or melting dangers. Instead, opt for a gas fire pit. You can choose a pit that is plumbed directly into your home's gas line or one that hooks up to a propane tank or something similar. Not only are gas pits safer on a deck, you can also turn them on and off with the click of a button or the flip of a switch, which makes the flames easier to control.

Add a Heat Shield

A heat shield or heat tile is placed between the fire pit and the decking. It protects the deck material from heat that could lead to combustion of wood decks or melting of composite or vinyl decking. The shield also protects the deck from any wayward embers that blow out of the fire pit.  A heat shield is typically made of a heat-resistant stone tile or from man made materials.

Consider Elevated Options

You can further increase the safety of a deck fire pit by opting for a raised style. There are traditional fire pits that are on a pedestal, which can be quite attractive. Another option is to put in a fire table as opposed to a pit. These tables come in both coffee table and dining table height. Many even have surfaces surrounding the fire pit where you can dine or set a drink while enjoying the flames.

Position the Pit Safely

The location of the fire pit on your deck also matters. Make sure it is not placed near any walls or railings, as the heat can cause damage to these structures. If you have a covered deck, you may need to adjust the height of the fire pit so it doesn't cast too much heat on the overhang. Most fire pits come with an owner's guide, which will detail the specific side and top spacing required for the specific fire pit design.

Use a Spark Guard

Even with care, a few sparks are sure to fly from your pit. You can ensure these embers cause no harm by having a spark guard over the top of the pit. These attractive screen half-spheres sit over the top of the outdoor fire pit where they don't inhibit your view or enjoyment of the flames.
